I agree, it is really tough to be a jack of all trades when you open your own practice. I'm sure this is true for any small business owner.

My husband and I are in the same boat (just the two of us, no staff) and it's hard to turn it off. We are living and breathing this thing all the time!

Why don't you hire a virtual assistant or bookeeper to help with the accounting? Of course, you will still have to oversee your trust accounting, but you can use them on an as needed basis. As for billing, you should very easily be able to switch over to electronic billing which is a snap. Otherwise, again, delegate it.

Thanks for the post by James. I was a staff-less solo for several years and can confirm that doing it all can be frustrating... but on the flip side... it is rewarding because (a) you know about everything concerning your business (b) helps you appreciate staff when you get them c) saves money from not providing a salary or benefits and (d) removes the guilt of scrambling for paycheck funds when you have a short month.

That said, being solo was the most rewarding aspect of my entire legal career.
